Interview with Matt Collyer of the Planet Smashers - February 2009

Seems like we haven’t heard much of the Planet Smashers in the past year. What have you guys been up to?

Not much, I’ve been hanging out in Montreal working at the label. Dave grabbed a job at Steve’s music…that’s about it!

What are some bands that have been highly influential to you?

The Clash, Op Ivy, the Specials, Elvis Costello, Minor Threat (in spirit not politically), um…Desmond Dekker and a big whack of old Jamaican reggae/ska.

What are the songs you enjoy to most to perform live?

Surfin’ in Tofino is always a blast. I’m a big fan of tracks like Swayed or Mighty too.

What venue would you say you enjoy playing the most in Montreal?

Club Soda!

Which Planet Smashers videos was the most fun to make and why?

Blind, cause I wasn’t in it. Ha! But seriously, Surfin’ in Tofino was amazing…we went surfing. :)

What have been some of the craziest things a fan has ever said/done to you?

Yikes! I think this is a question for Cooper…um…there’s been some great tattoos over the years (mighty logo, the stompie logo, the all-skanadian mountie from the first comp)…and some other more insane rock n’ roll shit that isn’t…ah…politically correct.

Best album of 2008 (ska or not) that you particularly liked and should be mentioned?

Best ska would be One Night Bands’ Hit and Run. For other forms; I’m a big fan of Fucked Up’s new one, and of course other releases on Stomp like Saint Alvia and the Creepshow.

Stomp is celebrating its 14th anniversary this month, what can we expect from the label in 2009? Any new signed band we should check out?

Yeah we’ve got a bunch of cool stuff coming out this spring; new albums from Subb, The Brains, The Real Deal, Johnstones and more. It’s going to be a great year.

What 2009 reserves for the Planet Smashers? A tour? A new album?

It’s pretty chill, we’re going to do a few dates here and there and start working on a new album.

Thanks to Matt Collyer and Alex Giguère for this opportunity!
