Interview with Matt from Brixton Robbers - August 2009

Talk a bit about the band: band members and what they do.

My name is Matt and I play drums. Nick sings and plays bass, Mark plays guitar and sings backups, and Max plays NHL '09 all day and some guitar...

You started the band in 2004 as Captain Finger but decided to change the name in March 2009. Why? Was it due to band member’s change or just didn’t like the name anymore?

Well the idea for Captain Finger came to us from a friend at a drunken party when we first started the band... We just thought it was funny or something and it kind of stuck. Don't ask why... We pretty much always hated that name and well when we made the record and got more serious and all, we decided to go with something we were happy about. The name actually comes from the street we all grew up on.

What bands/idols/genre influenced you the most or incited you to start a band?

We pretty much all share the same cliché influences like NOFX, Bad Religion, Sublime, etc... Nick listens to a lot of reggae and Tom Waits, Mark likes grungy stuff, although he's been getting into some harder stuff lately like Cancer Bats. I'm a huge Flatliners fan and Max likes metal.... but we don't let him put that into our stuff ha! ha!

How many times a week do you practice? Is it hard sometimes to get together? Does it conflict often with your jobs or school?

Well we're all finished school now and we usually practice around 3 times a week. We also all have jobs where are bosses are cool with touring... Well... We'll see about that because we're starting to tour more so some of us might lose their jobs but... who cares!

In what other cities have you played so far? Did you notice a difference about the crowd? Do you think Montreal has a difficult crowd?

We did a few Quebec and Ontario tours these past few years and we toured Canada in April so we've seen a whole bunch of Canadian cities. Crowds out West are pretty awesome and people are stoked even if it's a small show because there aren't that many shows in towns like Saskatoon. That's kind of the thing with Montreal. So many bigger bands come through here that the smaller shows don't do too well. But when you get on a big show it's a really great city to play.

You have played with popular bands such as Subb and Streetlight Manifesto, how did it feel to play on the same stage as those bands?

Funny thing is those 2 shows were kind of shitty for us... The Streetlight show was like our third show and we were pretty bad so I don't have a great souvenir of that show even though the place was packed. The Subb show was bad because the promoter didn't know what he was doing and like 20 people showed up... So yeah... not great shows..

I'm much more happy about our experiences touring Canada with UK Subs or playing Longueuil with The Sainte Catherines, which was a sick show! The Subs have been around since the beginning and they have so many stories to share so I can tell you that the 10 hour drives weren't as boring as some people would have you believe.

What are your plans for the rest of 2009 and 2010? Is there an album coming or a tour?

Well our very first record "Rocks and Cranes" is coming out August 28th which is also our tour kickoff show. We're doing another Canadian run. The record is coming out on Big Wheel Records, a record label I'm starting with some friends of mine, so yeah... very stoked about this year!

Thanks Matt for the interview!
